About Tape Drives

Tape drives were developed to provide a way to store large amounts of data offline. In the early days disk drives were limited in capacity and as such tape provided a perfect medium for storing this data offline.

Tape drives today have evolved to become the most widely used devices for backup and restore. The multiple types of tape devices and media, can sometimes lead to the wrong product being purchased or specified.

Backup is where information is replicated from the server(s) to the backup media, normally tape. This information is held for a specified period before it is overwritten (typically 30 days). Should a server fail, this information can be restored to the same state as the last backup.

Increasingly today due to the huge capacity and tape drive performance automated tape libraries are being used for Data Archiving. These solutions free up valuable disk space on expensive disk arrays but still allow users access to archived data.

Tape Autoloaders

A range of tape autoloaders from Quantum and HP. The tape autoloaders provide an entry level backup solution that removes the necessity to change daily backup tapes by having a magazine cartridge that holds a number of tapes. The definition of a tape autoloader is that it has a number of media slots and a single tape drive.
